Insh Marshes RSPB Reserve

The river Spey meanders its way from its source down through Badenoch, passing Kingussie before reaching Insh Marshes. From Kingussie to Loch Insh, the Spey lazily flows down the length of RSPB Insh Marshes; the shallow gradient makes its character more like that of a river reaching the sea. The Nature Reserve is a unique floodplain shape by glaciers, floods and man, supporting an abundance of rare species and habitat. We have three circular walks across the site so you can enjoy this special place. All three trails follow the woodland edge with view points across the reserve. The Invertromie trail is the longest trail and takes you through a range of Highland habitats. You first encounter the rare aspen trees followed by heath and birch dominated woodlands, blaeberry glades and orchid rich meadow. Leaving from Insh Marshes Reserve car park, the Invertromie trail starts near the Lookout which was built in 2010, designed to give panoramic views and wildlife watching opportunities with good accessibility.
